Panthers drop conference opener 23-10

Jacksonville State junior quarterback Ryan Perrilloux threw for 288 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 19 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gamecocks to a 23-10 victory against Eastern on Saturday afternoon at O’Brien Stadium.

Perrilloux threw two interceptions but finished the game with 20-of-25 passing to lead the Gamecocks (3-1, 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference).

The Panthers (2-3, 0-1 OVC) never got their running game started and finished the game with 20 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Eastern head coach Bob Spoo said the Panthers’ lost the running game up front to a more physical Jacksonville State defensive line.

Eastern red-shirt senior running back Travorus Bess led the Panthers with 24 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Red-shirt junior quarterback Bodie Reeder completed 19-of-32 passes for 206 yards to lead the Panthers.

Eastern’s lone touchdown came on a blocked punt in the fourth quarter by freshman cornerback Kenny Kinchen. Senior cornerback Adrian Arrington recovered the blocked punt and scampered 16 yards for the score.

Eastern has next weekend off and will continue OVC play on Oct. 9 in Martin, Tenn.
