City council to vote on Sunday bar hours
The Charleston City Council may decide whether to extend the sale of alcohol on Sundays for local bars and restaurants at tonight’s meeting.
Charleston is proposing that the hours of sale be increased one hour, from 11 p.m. to midnight.
“The purpose is for sporting events,” Mayor John Inyart said. “Some games start much later on Sundays, West Coast games, and the owners have to kick people out before it’s over.”
The amended ordinance intends to allow bar owners to keep their patrons in for full term or most of a televised sporting event.
nyart said that it will aid the business at the bars, encouraging people to attend if they can stay for the entire game.
The community is home to more than 10 pubs and bars.
Inyart said Dave Kinnard, owner of Marty’s, 1666 4th St., and Chris Clayton, owner of Panther Paw Bar and Grill, 1412 4th St., were both key in bringing this ordinance to the city’s attention.
Monday through Saturday hours of sale are from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In addition to the approval of the amendment on hours of sale, the council will also approve a resolution authorizing the sale of surplus equipment that the city used.
By law, the city is not allowed to give used equipment away and instead will hold an auction to sell the items back to community members.
Included in the items to be sold are several vehicles and a computer. Dates for the auction are not set.
The appointment of Dale Wolf to the Tourism Advisory Board is also on the agenda as well as the resolution to support the Chamber of Commerce’s new campaign “Buy Local – Choose Charleston.”
“The Chamber wants to encourage the people of Charleston to buy as much as they can here to aid the city’s overall quality through an increase in sales tax income,” Inyart said.
The council also will vote on an ordinance accepting responsibility of new roadway, Stonefield Lane.
This is typical of any scenario in which a developer has finished their project and then petitions to turn it over to the city for any future repairs on water mains, sanitary sewer mains and storm sewer mains, Inyart said.
“The road will be accepted only if it meets the safety and construction requirements of the state,” he said.
Stonefield Lane is part of The Fields subdivision.
