‘Semi-Pro’ not so good

“Semi-Pro” is definite proof that Will Ferrell’s movies are going downhill quickly.

Someone unfamiliar with Ferrell’s movies will wonder if this was a comedy or a film about a historical event, and would most likely choose the latter.

Jackie Moon (Ferrell) is the owner, head coach, power forward and promoter of the fictitious American Basketball Association team, the Flint Tropics in “Semi-Pro.”

Moon made his money from the hit single, “Love Me Sexy,” which he later admits he stole from his late mother.

Once the ABA commissioner (David Koechner) informs the ABA team owners the top four teams will merge with the NBA at the conclusion of the season, Moon does all he can to get into one of the top positions, including trading a washing machine for former NBA point guard, Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson).

Complete lack of hilarity ensues.

The Flint Tropics are then thrown into the mix of the real 1976 ABA and NBA merger.

The film does a poor job of developing the characters and explaining their background. It seems like the film-makers were arrogant and thought that the film would be a success just because it stars Ferrell.

They did not realize there is nothing valuable or worth watching in this movie.

The story, as in most Ferrell movies, follows a trite plot line, such as “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights” and “Blades of Glory.”

The film starts with Ferrell, loved by friends and admirers alike, at the prime of his game.

Later, he takes a somewhat downward spiral, only to redeem himself in the end.

However, instead of a news anchor, a NASCAR driver or an ice skater, he portrays a semi-pro basketball player in the 1970s.

Although the plot was weak, the film had a genuine 1970s tone.

The clothing and environment in the movie made me feel like I was watching a movie filmed during the time period.

The music was funky and groove-oriented and fit the ’70s.

The Jackie Moon song, “Love Me Sexy,” which opens the film easily, could have been heard at a disco club during that time.

Still, the music, clothing and setting cannot make up for the other elements of the film.

While the last few movies of Farrell’s were somewhat entertaining, “Semi-Pro” was a miserable failure.

If you are going into this movie to attain some new Ferrell one-liners or quotes to say to friends, you will leave the theater completely let down.
