Relaxing before finals stress hits

Residence halls are preparing for final exam week, which starts Monday.

During the week students living in residence halls will be subject to intensive quiet hours when they will be prohibited from making loud noises to allow others the opportunity to study for final exams.

In order to give students a break from the monotony of being muzzled during this time, the hall councils of each residence hall usually offer snacks and games during the breaks in intensive quiet hours.

The Carman Hall Council executive board decided to give students a chance to let some of their stress and anxiety go before finals begin with “Less Stress Before Tests,” a slate of activities and entertainment tonight.

Sophomore elementary education major Rachel Sosey, who is the publicity chair for the Carman Hall executive board, said their activities will allow students to have some fun and release some tension before next week.

“We just hope (students) can relax a little bit before test time,” she said. “It’s such a stressful time.”

To manage this stress, Sosey said the council invited the comedy routines of the student theatre group Hello Dali.

She said residents could come and watch the show and have some fun and unwind while participating in an activity, which will allow them to think about something other than the looming shadow of final exams.

Along with the humor from Hello Dali, Sosey said the council decided to also invite several representatives of the Health Education Resource Center to provide students with massages and aromatherapy.

“It’s just to let students relax before finals,” she said.

Rachel Fisher, communications and marketing specialist for the center, said several different kinds of therapeutic equipment would be on hand at the event for students to take advantage of.

She said representatives would bring electronic back, calf and foot massagers to provide students with relaxing massages to release any built up tension within their muscles.

Fisher also said students will be given aroma therapy bags which are meant to stimulate memory and allow students to sleep easier in the face of any stress they might be feeling.

Fisher commended the Carmen Hall council for deciding to host an event like this because she feels students need chances like this to relieve themselves of the stress schoolwork and finals cause them.

“We’re happy to do it,” she said. “I always think it’s important for people to take time to relax.”
