RHA to hear diversity requirements

Members of the Residence Hall Association will hear a proposal from Student Government during their meeting at 5 p.m today in the Stevenson Hall Lobby.

RHA President Jarrod Scherle said Student Body President Cole Rogers will speak about a new cultural diversity graduation requirement proposal.

Rogers will discuss the increase in the number of cultural diversity class hour requirement from three course hours to six course hours.

Rogers said this increase does not mean students will have to take more classes.

Instead of taking an additional course, the cultural diversity course would replace another course already an existing requirement.

He said this proposal was inspired by diversity tensions he observed last year and research that shows extra diversity education helps students succeed in the world.

Rogers said he has addressed some Registered Student Organizations already and will address RHA in order to garner support for the proposal among student organizations.

Brittany Kraft, National Communications Coordinator/Illinois Communications Coordinator, will also speak at the meeting about the Illinois Residence Hall Association conference.

Kraft will discuss preparations for the 2008 conference, as well as ask members to volunteer for the bid team. The purpose of this bid team is to petition for Eastern to host the 2009 conference.

The subject of bidding for the 2009 conference was brought up at last week’s RHA meeting. However, members made no formal decision.

Kraft was part of the bid team last year, who tried to bring the 2008 IRHA conference to Eastern. The team was unsuccessful in their attempts.
