Students will have an opportunity to listen to a music award winner Wednesday.

Michael Jacobs, the 2003 Native American Music Award winner for Best Independent Recording will be in the Bridge Lounge of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union at 8 p.m. today.

Jacobs will be performing in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

Jacobs won best Native American Singer for Independent Recording with the album “Sacred Nation” in 2003.

He was also nominated for two awards at this year’s Native American Music Awards. He was up for Best Male Artist and Best Pop Recording with the album “The Journey.”

The ninth Annual Native American Music Awards were held on Oct. 6 in Niagara Falls, NY. Jacobs did not win the two awards he was nominated for. The show will be broadcasted on MHZ Networks Friday.

Minority Affairs is co-sponsoring the event with University Board.

Mona Davenport, director of minority affairs, said that Minority Affairs likes to bring people from other backgrounds for events such as this.

“We love to assist departments/organizations with bringing artists from different cultural backgrounds to our institution,” Davenport said. “The event was selected because of his talent and cultural enrichment he could bring to our campus.”

Graduate Assistant Matt Feely said that UB first heard about Jacobs because of the Minority Affairs office.

Concerts sponsored by the university have many people that plan them, both with deciding who to have come as well as planning the actual event.

“Smaller concerts are decided by the grad assistant and the UB coordinator,” Feely said.

Feely is the graduate assistant for the Student Life Office. The UB cultural arts coordinator is Sydney Stanhope.

This concert’s objective was two-fold.

“It is to promote diversity and celebrate Native American Month,” Feely said.
