‘Garbage in disguise’

Ruthimus Prime visited campus Monday night.

Whether or not he was related to Optimus Prime was never answered.

The Trashformer paid a visit to the basketball courts across Seventh Street.

Trashformers, a Student Government sponsored event, had teams from residence halls build a figure out of recyclable material and the cool temperatures did not stop the teams from showcasing their accomplishments.

Carman Hall won the competition with Ruthimus Prime, which even sported some wheels to go along with the Transformers theme.

Joey Seger, a freshman undecided major, said it only took 30 minutes to build Ruthimus Prime.

Other creatures included the Thomas Hall Fallen U.S. Soldier, which was made out of Duct Tape, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and a piece of paper, and the first Lawson Hall Trashformer Gogo Green.

Every participant received a free T-shirt and the Carman Hall team will receive a pizza party.

Student Senate member Angelina Montleon said the University Development and Recycling Committee visited the residence halls last month to introduce the event to the hall councils and to give the requirements.

Each team could build their Trashformer before the event, but they only had 30 minutes perfect it at the judge site.

The Trashformers had to be made out of all recyclable material and no alcohol bottles or cans could be used.

The committee threw the event to raise recycling awareness on campus.

“It is to get Eastern excited about recycling,” Montleon said.

The committee has a few other plans in the near future.

A campus beautification week to happen around Earth Day is in the works along with expanding recycling in Greek Court and University Court.

This plan includes putting recycle cans in the buildings just like in the residence halls.

Judging the event were President Bill Perry; Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs; Ceci Brinker, director of student life; and Student Senate member Sarah Shaw.
