Senate to vote on Perry’s pizza party

Student Senate will vote tonight on a proposal approving $301 for a pizza party with Eastern President Bill Perry.

The event, called “Pizza with the President,” will be open to all students who wish to attend.

Student Government would use over $240 of the bill to pay for 40 pizzas. Boxa donated 10 pizzas, for a total 50 pizzas.

If approved, the pizza party will take place Nov. 7 in the Student Recreation Center.

Biology professor Amanda Poffinbarger will also speak at the meeting.

Poffinbarger is among several professors who are against the biology department’s decision to have biology graduate students teach general education classes and labs this year.

She has said in the past she feels the quality of education for students has fallen because of this policy.

The senate will also vote to approve executive positions of the Suicide Awareness Initiative.

The committee, formed by senate member Jeff Melanson, is trying to become a permanent committee.

Melanson is considering changing the committee’s name because of its length.

Melanson had planned to ask the Apportionment Board for money to pay for binders and other tools last Thursday, but was unable to because AB did not meet quorum. This does not affect whether the committee executive members can be approved.

Levi Bulgar, student executive vice president and chair of the Student Action Team, is also holding a voter registration drive today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Booths in the Library and South quads will allow students to register to vote.

Bulgar says the booths will be more festive than in the past and will include costumes and treats.

“Every time we hold a registration drive, we find new students who haven’t registered yet, and we hope the Halloween event will be no different,” Bulgar said.
