Halloween extravaganza

On Halloween, Brian Peterno will perform what he describes to be three of Lunchbox Voodoo’s best scripts yet.

“It’s a recap of the shows we have done so far this year,” said Peterno, senior theater major and president of Lunchbox Voodoo, a sketch comedy group.

Lunchbox Voodoo, along with Hello Dali, Rhythm and Ecstasy and other groups will perform today for an event called Extravaganza, a variety show presented by Alpha Psi Omega, the theater honors fraternity.

Abby Carter, senior theater arts major, has been involved with Lunchbox Voodoo for the past three years.

“We write our own original scripts,” Carter said.

Improvisational scripts can be used again if the characters are changed.

“We could use the same script 10 different times, but we don’t,” Peterno said.

Members will perform three scripts for their act. Each script lasts around three to five minutes.

Sometimes students will submit ideas of scripts for Lunchbox Voodoo to use in their shows.

“It doesn’t matter (what) your major or background (is); with improv, anyone can submit a script,” Peterno said.

Lunchbox Voodoo collectively writes its sketches.

“Our sketches come from the entire group,” Carter said.

The members will write sketches on what they think seems interesting. Occasionally, they host sketchwriting groups to come up with new scripts.

“We write about what’s amusing to us,” Carter said.

Lunchbox Voodoo members enjoy being part of a performance group.

“Show night is my favorite part of being involved with Lunchbox Voodoo,” Carter said.

Hello Dali, an improvisational group whose performances are similar to those of the TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” will also perform during Extravaganza.

“We are going to perform two sets of improv games, with each set lasting 10 minutes,” said Jake Senesac, senior theater arts major.

Senesac has been a member of Hello Dali for three years.

Hello Dali’s act is never the same.

The sets are constantly changed for each show.

Hello Dali also likes to have audience participation; the group’s shows sometime depend on it.

They will have a set ready and will take audiences suggestions for their act. Hello Dali starts the act by saying the basics of the set; the audience will help determine what happens next.

“We take suggestions regarding games that have already been chosen,” Senesac said.

Hello Dali appeals to its members because of the constant change of material.

“I like the fact that it changes every time. It’s fun,” Senesac said.

Extravaganza will be today at 7 p.m. in the University Ballroom at the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. A prize will be awarded for best Halloween costume. Admission is $3.
