Bowled over by Esperanaza

In the basement of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, high scores were being set.

About 15 people were in attendance at the Esperanza Bowling Social on Wednesday.

The colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma, Inc., along with Esperanza, the TRIO program, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness, sponsored the bowling event.

“The TRIO program gives free counseling to first-generation college students and we will have a jar with breast cancer ribbons and people can put donations in them,” said Crystal Perez, a member of the colony.

Bowling is not the only event that the colony of Sigma Lamda Gamma, Inc. hosted this week.

On Monday, they had a community service project at the Coles County Animal Shelter and an informational held on Tuesday.

“We all worked together as a group to come up with these ideas,” said Marcella Cadena, treasurer of the colony. “Last semester we came together and decided events, and last month we picked two people to work on each event.”

Solymar Gomez, president of the colony, said the colony has already started, but they are in the process of making chapters.

“We wanted to get people out there and start recruiting,” she said. “We wanted to have a community service project, an informational, a cultural event and fun along with educational aspects.”

She said once the chapters are settled, the people in charge of them can try and recruit more people for the chapter.

Shannon Stewart, junior consumer science major, said she wanted a sorority with good diversity in it.

Stewart said she wanted to join Alpha Sigma Alpha her freshman year but the colony did not have much ethnic diversity.

“This sorority is more about diversity, pride, and culture,” Stewart said. “The girls here bring forth pride and honor, and that’s the reason I really wanted to do it. I have a sister who is a Zeta and a cousin who is a Delta and I wanted to forge my own path.”
