Planning for life after college

Planning life after college can be tricky, but after Wednesday, many students will have done just that.

Career Services is having a Graduate School Information Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union Ballroom.

This event will give students a chance to learn about the admissions process for graduate school, learn what the schools expect and provide an opportunity to ask questions.

Bobbi Kingery, career advisor, said all students are welcome to attend, especially juniors and seniors.

Kingery said a student’s junior year is the year they should narrow down what program they want and sophomore year is a good time to go to get ahead. She also added that seniors should go to meet people from the school of their choice.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet the people who may be reviewing their applications soon,” Kingery said.

Over 50 organizations are scheduled to be at the event, including Southern Illinois University, the University of Illinois and Illinois State University.

Kingery said Career Services invites schools with programs that students have a high interest in. The majority of schools are in Illinois, which is good because most students stay in the state for graduate school.

“It’s also easier to get those schools to us (for the event),” Kingery said.

The program also likes to bring new programs that students may not be aware of, Kingery said. The University of Cincinnati is offering information about graduate study in cell and cancer biology while many other schools are bringing information about their nursing programs, a relatively new topic of interest at Eastern.

Popular schools in surrounding states are also invited, as well as many schools in the Chicago area.

“Many of our students are from there and want to head home,” Kingery said.

She advises students to do some research beforehand and have questions ready that are not answered on the schools’ Web sites.

She said students who go to Graduate School Information Day feel more confident in their choice and better understand the admissions process.

“It is wonderful if you know what you’re going after, and this is the next step,” Kingery said.

Kingery said it is beneficial to know what you want to do so you can gain the experience necessary for that field.

Joe Haygood is an Eastern graduate student and said he did not attend Graduate School Information Day but definitely recommends it.

He had to do his own research and more one-on-one things because he did not go to the event.

“It would have saved me an interview,” Haygood said.

Kingery said students need to find out whether they need to go to graduate school or not. Many programs, such as psychology, have no choice.

“You can pick the right program if you know what you’re working toward,” Kingery said.
