Both the women’s and men’s swimming teams lost their home opener at Lantz Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The women’s team lost 134-104 and the men lost 140-98.

Junior Joe Laird won both the 1-and 3-meter diving contests. Freshman Matthew Scaliatine won the 100-yard-breaststroke in a time of one minute, 2.39 seconds.

The women’s team had first place finishes with sophomore Lauren Zillmer in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.45), senior Patty Young in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.17) and sophomore Lauren Nilsen in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.91).

Both swimming teams also dropped their dual meets at Ball State Friday evening. The men lost 139-98 and the women’s team lost 143-85.

The men’s team is now 1-2 and the women’s team is 0-3 this season. The Panthers next swim against Evansville at 1 p.m. Oct. 27 at Lantz Natatorium.

Panthers fall in OVC rankings

The Panthers dropped both of their weekend matches to Ohio Valley Conference rivals Jacksonville State (9-2 OVC, 12-6 overall) and Samford (4-6, 9-10).

Eastern is in 10th place of 11 teams with a 2-9 OVC record and a 9-11 overall record.

The Panthers were swept 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-19) by the Gamecocks on Friday and lost in four games (30-27, 25-30, 30-15, 30-26) to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Eliza Zwettler recorded the only Panther double-double for the weekend with 19 kills and 13 digs during Saturday’s match. Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Orr had 11 kills and three blocks for the Bulldogs match.

Friday’s match was the first time sophomore Lauren Schutte started at setter this season, and she started Saturday’s match as well. She had a combined 25 assists for both matches and a .250 hitting percentage for Saturday’s match.

The Panthers have two home matches against Tennessee State at 7 p.m. Friday and Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m. Saturday.
