Triple Threat

Women’s tennis coach John Blackburn led his team to a win against Western Illinois Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers defeated the Leathernecks 11-4. With the victory, the Panthers retain the ‘Mayor’s Cup,’ a feat they have won 4-out-of-5 times against Western since renewing their rivalry in 2000. Below are three athletes that helped ensure the victory.

1. Sandra Sasidharan – The senior from Chennai, India, won her singles match at the No. 1 spot and won her dual match at No. 2 with freshman Cara Huck. Last season, she was 19-2, with 17 straight wins and played the entire season at the No. 1 in singles.

2. Natalie Martin – The junior Montreal, Quebec, native won her singles match at No. 2 and also teamed up with sophomore Hayley Homburg to win her dual match as well. Martin finished with a 20-2 record playing at No. 2 singles and was 9-1 in Ohio Valley Conference matches.

3. Hayley Homburg – The sophomore from Monona, Wis., won her singles match at No. 3 and teamed with Martin at the No. 2 spot for the dual match win. Homburg was the OVC Freshman of the Year after she had a 16-6 record and was 9-1 in OVC action last season.
