Byron busts Myths at Eastern
Kari Byron found a career she loves.
Byron, a regular cast member on the hit Discovery show MythBusters gave a lecture in the Grand Ballroom on Wednesday night.
Dr. Bonnie Irwin was the moderator for the evening.
Irwin had something in common with Byron.
“I just found out that Kari and I went to the same high school,” Irwin said.
In college Byron majored in film and sculpture. She took some time finding out what she really enjoyed.
“I had odd jobs, I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” Byron said.
It wasn’t until later that she found out how interesting science and myths could be.
Byron landed an internship with Jamie Hyneman who happened to be a co-host of MythBusters
The show was like nothing that ever had been on T.V. before. Both the cast and audience soon fell in love with the show’s ability to incorporate science with entertainment.
“It was a unique experience. The show was mecca, we loved it,” Byron said.
Myths performed on the show are only a portion of what actually goes on with filming said Byron.
“For every one hour of t.v. show, we shot 100 hours of film,” Byron said. “There is a lot more into it than you would ever imagine.”
The first thing that is done is to define what exactly the myth is. From there, a lot of research is needed to find out everything about the subject.
Byron gets to know everything about one subject that the show is doing a myth on and then it is on to another subject.
Since MythBusters has a lot of factual information in it the show needs professionals who can work with the cast on the myths.
The cast has researchers who look for myths for the show. However, that is not the only way that ideas for myths can be entered for the show.
Byron said that a lot of the myths come from the viewers.
“Half of the myths come from the audience. They can go online to the Discovery Channel’s website and enter in their idea for a myth,” Byron said.
When hearing about MythBusters one would probably assume that the myths that cause the most dangers are the ones with firearms or exploding matters.
Byon said that it is usually the small things that you would not think about that can turn bad.
Once Byron burned her eyelashes with a lighter.
Being on MythBusters, Byron has seen some amazing things happen.
Her most surprising myth was the one about the Chinese invasion. It turned out that the technology we have today could not do what the little technology they had in 400 B.C. could do.
Some things that are done on the show have to be kept secret for safety purposes.
Byron gave an example of this with the exploding pants episode.
“We couldn’t name the herbicide for the exploding pants episode,” Byron said.
Even after a long day of filming, Byron is really never done with MythBusters.
“You can’t go home without MythBusters, it’s a 24 hour experience,” Byron said.
For students wanting to pursue a dream of their’s Byron had some advice.
“Go for what you like, money will follow,” Byron said.
