Matt Daniels’ OVC Football Picks
Last week’s record: 4-2
Overall season record: 25-8
Tennessee Tech 35
Tennessee-Martin 24
-By the end of the year, Tech’s offense won’t be the best in the OVC. But by mid-season, the Golden Eagles offense is by far the best. A weak UTM defense sends Skyhawks to 0-5 start.
Eastern Kentucky 34
Samford 13
-Two-headed monster of Bobby Washington and Mark Dunn in the backfield too much for Bulldogs to handle. Samford proves it still has areas to improve before it contends in the league.
Tennessee State 24
Florida A&M 14
-Play of TSU’s defense highlight in Saturday’s game at the Georgia Dome. A&M’s band will be more entertaining than the Rattlers’ offense.
Jacksonville State 27
Murray State 20
-Learning curve still not there yet for Matt Griffin’s Racers. While JSU Jack Crowe won’t come away pleased with his team’s play, the Gamecocks will still come away with the win.
Eastern Illinois 31
Southeast Missouri 14
-Tony Samuel won’t have to worry about Micah Rucker being Eastern’s entire offense this year. Instead, the second-year SEMO head coach will have to worry about the Panthers backfield as Eastern runs for 250-plus yards.
Austin Peay 24
Gardner Webb 21
-Austin Peay continues surprising start with last second field goal the difference this week. If special teams could have executed against Tennessee State in week 3 loss, the Governors would be the talk of not only the OVC, but also the nation.
