Students protest war outside Old Main
About ten students stood in front of Old Main Tuesday to exercise their First Amendment right to protest the War in Iraq and support for bringing the troops home.
Matt Niemerg, senior math and computer science major, and libertarian, organized the protest with the help of Ryan Kerch, junior biology major and president of the College Democrats at Eastern.
Niemerg said the goal was to get students more interested in the war because the war will define “our generation.”
The protest took place from 3 p.m. to about 4:15 p.m.
Protestors were College Democrats, Libertarians and non-political party students.
Despite the low turn out, many passers-by took notice and added to the scene by honking their horns and verbally stating their support for the cause.
Kerch said the group received no negative feedback and participants said they felt their protest was making a difference, even if on a small level.
Senior history and political science major Dan Freberg said he had a personal reason to protest. He said he has two friends in the military, his brother’s best friend is a Marine sniper on his fourth tour of duty and a friend from his youth enlisted in the army after high school to help pay for college but was deployed to Iraq.
“I’m out here to give them a voice,” Freberg said.
Kerch said some protestors did not agree with war at all, others agree with the war with Afghanistan but not Iraq, but they all agreed that the war in Iraq is wrong.
Freshman Zach Wcislow, brought his guitar and sang anti-war songs.
“Loss of innocent life is never good or right,” Freberg said. “I don’t know what to do but killing innocent people is not the answer.”
