Men’s soccer ties at Loyola
Eastern men’s soccer team took the lead late in its match against Loyola (Chicago) at Loyola Soccer Park but lost it just a minute later.
The Panthers and Ramblers finished Wednesday’s match deadlocked in a 2-2 tie after two overtimes.
The Panthers (4-0-1) took the lead in the 80th minute on a goal by freshman forward Alex Harrison off a corner kick.
Harrison said sloppy play by the Panthers allowed Loyola (2-2-1) to tie the game back up as Loyola’s Alex Jones scored in the 81st minute on a free kick.
Junior goalkeeper Mark Hansen made a save to preserve the tie in the final minutes of the second half on a free kick by Loyola.
The teams then played scoreless soccer through the two overtime periods.
Eastern head coach Adam Howarth was still happy with the result.
“That was not our best performance,” Howarth said. “But to come on the road and get a tie in a hostile environment is not bad.”
Twenty of 26 players saw playing time.
“We got to play a lot of guys which is always good,” Howarth said.
Eastern had plenty of fan support, as Eastern supporters came out to cheer the Panthers on the road.
“The crowd was fantastic,” Harrison said. “They helped us through overtime, and I thank them for their support.”
Senior midfielder Mick Galeski started the Panther scoring with a kick from 25 feet, which soared through the top left of the goal in the eighth minute. He was not disappointed with his team’s performance.
Loyola’s Michael Ferguson tied the game 1-1 in the 58th minute after the ball deflected off Hansen.
“Loyola was a good team,” Galeski said. “We worked hard but just came up short.”
