Council looks in new direction
Finding a replacement faculty member and two new student delegates were among the items discussed at Eastern’s Council on Academic Affairs meeting yesterday.
Other items on the meeting’s agenda included a discussion on the benefits of the updated online catalog and handbook, proposal deadlines, enrollment and general council duties.
The council will need to replace member Julie Campbell of the English department because she will not be able to attend meeting this semester due to a schedule conflict.
Alison Kostelich, student vice president for academic affairs and junior business major, will need to find new members to fill out the council as well.
She is in charge of appointing two more student delegates. She said that the student delegates should be there for the next meeting.
Christie Roszkowski of the history department said she feels the council has been fulfilling its duties well.
However, she also said that she feels the council could improve by taking a more active role in policy change.
She said that, in the past, the trend of the council has been to change policy when somebody notices it needs to be changed.
To combat this, the council stressed the importance of getting in proposals early for course revisions.
When the council reviews a curriculum, it looks for duplication of content, proliferation of courses and maintaining desirable standards.
Non-voting members Blair Lord Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Academic Advising Member, Lora Green, were also present at the meeting Wednesday.
Even though these members cannot change policy through a vote, Jean Dilwirth of family and consumer sciences said that these members’ presence during the meeting alone can influence the other members’ votes.
