Barbequing for a cause

Students will have an opportunity this Sunday to raise money for those in need.

The annual barbeque hosted by Greek Life will go to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The three Greek governing councils – Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Interfraternity Council – sponsor this event. It is also sponsored by the honorary organization Lambda Alpha Delta.

“This event started over eight years ago as a way to welcome students back for the new academic year and to highlight the important work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is the philanthropic charity sponsored by the entire Greek community,” said Bob Dudolski, director of Greek Life.

The meal will be at Carman dining center. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and cookies will be served. Students can use a meal swipe to enter.

Every year this barbeque benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude’s has a special meaning for some of the Greek Life members.

“Throughout the years we have had members of EIU’s Greek community who

are cancer survivors and have also benefited from the great work of St.

Jude’s Hospital. We fully support the work that the hospital does in

curing childhood terminal illness,” Dudolski said.

There will be a table set up with information about Greek Life at Eastern; however, the primary goal of the barbeque is to raise money for St. Jude’s.

Resident Assistants were given sheets to pass out to their floor providing a sign up for the two games that will be played during the barbeque: four square and sand volleyball.

Students from resident halls then form teams and pay an entry fee to participate. Each team, whether playing four square or sand volleyball, pays a $5 entry fee to play.

Jeff Margalus, senior physical education major and Interfraternity Council of recruitment vice president, has been involved with the barbeque for two years.

The barbeque helps join the Greek students with the non-Greek students.

“There is an even group of Greeks and non Greeks that go to the barbeque,” Margalus said.

Katie Pankow, senior English with teacher’s certification major and vice president of recruitment and retention, said that the barbeque is a great way to come learn about Greek Life.

“You get to know other people and see how we do a lot of great things that don’t involve just parties,” Pankow said.

The St. Jude’s barbeque will be Sunday with the games from 3-7 p.m. with the meal starting at 4:45 p.m.
