Summer of Frisbee Golf

Myself, I am an avid golfer. I’ve been playing golf since I was about 10. I have always loved the game for many reasons. The first time I even heard of Frisbee golf was on an episode of Seinfeld when one of the goals of “The Summer or George” was to play Frisbee golf.

“Frolf, frisbee golf Jerry. Golf with a Frisbee,” George says to Jerry in the episode of “The Summer of George.” Frisbee golf utilizes the strengths that golf has but is not going to empty your wallet to participate in the pleasure.

A little over a year ago when I was working at 4th St. Records I encountered my first sightings of Frisbee golf discs. For a little over a year now, 4th St. Records has been selling discs for Frisbee golf and have sold pretty well according to employee Shawn Picketts.

4th St. has been selling the discs when the closet Frisbee course was in Effingham. It could be said that 4th St. may have indirectly sparked the idea of the SRC creating a course on campus.

I believe it is great that the SRC has decided to add a 9-hole course to the campus. It is an activity that gets people outside. Just walking from hole-to-hole gets people that exercise they otherwise might be lacking.

Whenever I run on the Panther trail on campus, the path runs right next to a few of the holes and I yet to not see someone using the course. I also have seen disc golf enthusiasts taking their dogs for walks while throwing their discs into a metal basket.

I want to commend the students for taking advantage of the facilities as well. To many times I have scene activities, facilities and events on campus not being taken advantage of (I am guilty of this crime as well) and it is very refreshing to see how our tuition went to something people are actually using. Remember how the SRC wanted to put the rock wall in the rec center?

Overall it is my belief that this Frisbee course being created has done nothing but good. There was no major construction to place the holes. It is another activity that is still growing in numbers and Eastern jumping on the bandwagon was a wise choice.

Now that we have a course, I finally get the chance to actually try the sport out without having to travel great distances to do so.
