Triple Threat: women soccer greats
Eastern women’s soccer will welcome back some of its past this weekend with its alumni game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakeside Field.
Second-year head coach Tim Nowak (above) has carried on the winning tradition set by his predecessor Steve Ballard, for the Panther soccer program.
Four straight trips to the NCAA College Cup (2001-04) highlight the program’s 12-year history.
Here are three players who helped establish and carry on the tradition of Eastern women’s soccer.
1. Beth Liesen, 2000-03 – Nowak’s current assistant also is the program’s greatest offensive threat. The former Panther forward holds not only the Eastern record for career goals (62) and career points (149), but both of those are also Ohio Valley Conference records.
She capped her senior year off by winning the OVC Player of the Year and leading the Panthers to an NCAA College Cup game against Missouri.
2. Tiffany Groene, 2002-05 – Groene did the opposite of Liesen, preventing teams from scoring. And she did pretty well at that. The Rockford native is Eastern’s all-time leader in shutouts (22.7) and is also the conference’s career leader.
She also holds the Panther record for most minutes in goal (5,551) and made three trips to the College Cup in her career.
3. Beth Aussin, 1995-98 – A deft finisher and scorer, Aussin still holds the program’s all-time record for assists (44). Aussin, along with teammates Tracie Strother and Heather Ory, helped get the Panther program started and earned it a level of credibility with their play.
During Aussin’s four years here, she helped the Panthers to a combined 48-29-2 record.
