SOC turns lives around
The 120-plus leaders from 64 Registered Student Organization who attended Monday’s Student Organization Council’s first meeting probably didn’t think it would raise them up, touch their heart and turn their lives around.
After the introductory presentation of the Student Organization Council (SOC), Student Body President Sean Anderson asked the student leaders to stand, touch their sternum and turn around in a circle.
The purpose of SOC is to promote school spirit, community service and networking among organizations, Anderson said during the presentation.
Presidents and treasurers for all RSOs were invited to SOC.
SOC would have a point system for RSOs.
A proposed point system would give RSOs points for holding regular meetings, attending an athletic event and for other items, as well.
The sample point system in the handout was from Florida International University.
“It’s a good idea if they can get people motivated to do it,” said Matt Toren, vice president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
Marty Scott, president of the EIU Psychology Club, had the same sentiments.
Patience is needed to make SOC work, but it will be good for the university, he said.
A lot of feedback was received at the meeting, Anderson said.
Anderson hopes to see SOC in full or partial form by the end of the year, which will help give credit to organizations and to help them fulfill their goals.
A proposal on RSO funding was also presented.
Cole Rogers, student vice president for student affairs, and Levi Bulgar, student vice president for business affairs, presented the direction they took in getting a proposal ready.
The benefits of RSO funding are increased school spirit, greater diversity, creating additional educational opportunities outside of class, and as a recruiting tool for Eastern, Bulgar said.
Potential problems for the funding are legal liabilities, the misuse of funds by an organization and the subjectivity of the funding process, Rogers said.
While there are proposals on how to disperse RSO funding, it will be mainly up to the administration, he said.
A student body referendum would have to be passed to get funds for RSOs.
