CUPB plans a diet
The Committee for University Planning and Budget thinks it might need to lose some weight.
CUPB currently has 36 voting members and nine non-voting members.
“I am very much in favor of downsizing CUPB; the current number of members is simply too large to operate meaningfully and efficiently,” said David Radavich, an English professor, who represents the arts and humanities department.
An ad hoc committee recommended that the size of CUPB be reduced; the motion carried unanimously.
Another issue is a resolution to make Eastern a smoke-free campus. In its Oct. 20 meeting, CUPB voted 15-12 in support of the idea of a smoke-free campus.
“We first need to enforce the current policies and prove that we are up to the task first, and then we can work in integrating new policies,” said Levi Bulgar, a social sciences major and student finance vice president.
The campus has been divided in its feelings toward a smoking ban. It passed in CUPB and in the Faculty Senate. On Nov. 1, the Student Senate passed a resolution not supporting a smoking ban and asked the administration to enforce the current smoking policy.
CUPB also has to deal with the rising costs of construction. The current budget is several years old, and raises in material costs have eaten away at the funding for a number of buildings, including the Doudna Fine Arts Center, Bulgar said.
CUPB delayed its meeting last Friday because of a conflict with the Board of Trustees meeting.
The committee will meet at 3 p.m. today, in the Arcola-Tuscola Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
