Campus smoking policy explained

Eastern’s current smoking policy (Internal Governing Policy 171) asks anyone who sees a person violating the policy by smoking in a nonsmoking designated area, to ask the smoker to stop.

If the smoker does not comply with university policy, the observer can report the smoker to the appropriate authority.

If the smoker is a student, they are to be reported to judicial affairs. Faculty members should be reported to the appropriate dean or vice president.

Administrative/professional staff should be reported to the appropriate dean, director or vice president. Civil Service staff should be reported to the department of human resources and non-university persons should be reported to the University Police Department.

UPD Chief Adam Due said there have been very few instances when anyone has been reported to UPD for violating the smoking policy.

“I don’t know that that many people complain,” Due said. “We’ve had very few over the years.”

He said there have been a few complaints about people smoking in the stands during football games, but that is pretty much it.

“Most people if you ask them to quit, if they’re polite about it. I think the people usually respond politely and extinguish the smoking materials,” he said.
