Triple Threat

Eastern Kentucky’s 31-28 upset victory against Tennessee-Martin pushed acting head coach Mark Hutson and the Panthers into a three-way tie atop the Ohio Valley Conference. The EKU win was not the only victory that improved Eastern’s playoff chances. The Panthers were ranked No. 20 in last week’s poll and will improve with their 38-14 win against Tennessee Tech, but also helping them will be the six teams above them in the poll, including UTM, that lost Saturday. Here are the three losses that will help the Panthers the most:

Villanova 21, No. 4 James Madison 20

The Dukes dropped their second game of the season to 5-5 Villanova in front of more than 7,000 fans at Villanova Stadium. Villanova’s DeQuese May scored on a 16-yard run with 1:21 left to play in the upset win.

Penn 22, No. 17 Harvard 13

Harvard’s four first half turnovers allowed Penn to build and 20-7 lead at halftime. The loss overshadowed Harvard tailback Clifton Dawson breaking the Ivy League all-time rushing record of 4,715 yards.

No. 14 Southern Illinois 47, No. 12 Northern Iowa 23

The Saluki’s scored 30 first half points in the blowout win. SIU tailback Arkee Whitlock set career highs with 40 carries for 180 yards and four touchdowns. The loss was Northern Iowa’s fourth of the season.
