A last-second field goal gave Eastern Kentucky a 31-28 upset victory against previously unbeaten Tennessee-Martin and kept Eastern Illinois’ championship possibilities alive.
EKU’s sophomore kicker Taylor Long drilled a 39-yard field goal with one second remaining and ended the Skyhawk’s eight game winning streak.
The game-winning field goal attempt was set up when EKU senior wide receiver Matt Schoborg blocked a Martin punt with 34 seconds remaining and the Colonels took over at the Skyhawk’s 23 yard line.
Tennessee-Martin’s turnovers proved to be costly as the Skyhawks turned the ball over four times and had two punts blocked.
Both teams were able to move the ball successfully on the ground. EKU tailback Bobby Washington ran for 119 yards and scored two touchdowns while his counterpart, Martin tailback Don Chapman also scored twice but ran for 171 yards.
