Team effort leads to big victory
Freshman Crystal Jones is in the record books.
Jones scored eight trys and helped the Panthers rout Loyola (Chicago) 103-0 in Lincoln Park.
“(We worked on) really getting the forwards to run with the backs so everybody can get on running the score,” Jones said. “Really incorporating the whole team makes it easier to score.”
The win was Eastern’s 14th straight and moved their record to 9-0.
The Panthers have just one game remaining, a game against Texas A & M in Little Rock, Ark.
Head coach Frank Graziano said the crowd was very supportive of Eastern.
“We had good support today,” he said. “Lots of friends, family, relatives to come watch us play.”
One player who was the benefactor of the support was senior wing Billie Salyers. Salyers is from the Lincoln Park area and scored her first try of the season.
“It was awesome,” Salyers said of scoring near her hometown.
Eastern ran wild on Loyola in the first half.
Stephanie Militello, Ashley Jenkins, Katie Folliard and Molly Clutter scored in the first half and sent the Panthers to a 44-0 lead.
The Panthers were without their leading scorer, Samantha Manto, because of a calf injury.
Despite the absence of Manto along with Loyola rotating the first and second strings, it was not enough for Loyola to be competitive.
In the second half, Eastern had Loyola chasing them up and down the field. Long runs of more than 40 yards from Jones, Jenkins were too much for Loyola to handle.
Loyola hooker Mara Slakas said that both teams played a good, clean game Saturday. Loyola was undefeated before playing Eastern, so losing for the first time this season was a different feeling, said Slakas.
“We didn’t put our top players out,” Slakas said, referring to the players who could not make it to the game on Saturday because their season was completed.
When Eastern stepped out onto the field, they were looking like a pretty fancy rugby team, Slakas said.
“We were calling ourselves the Bad News Bears in comparison to Eastern,” Slakas said.
