Lecture proposal was tabled
University Board will have to present to Apportionment Board next week as their $35,000 lecture proposal was tabled at Thursday’s meeting.
Melissa Schaefer, UB vice chair, and Kendall Patterson, lectures coordinator, presented the proposal that would bring bigger-named speakers to Eastern.
While there was no official speaker list, ideas included “Apprentice” winner Bill Rancic, MTV news correspondent SuChin Pak and Jody Sweetin of “Full House” fame. Bigger-named speakers would be a part of the Spotlight Series.
Another series also proposed is the Crossfire series. It would bring speakers who would have a debate style lecture with audience interaction. The series would cover controversial topics that Patterson said students said they would like to see.
Board member Eric Wilbur was concerned about the large amount of money UB was asking for. Including the current request, UB has asked for about $70,000, which amounts to a 28.44 percent increase in this year’s budget, Wilbur said.
“Well, they (UB) need to realize that we’re not a cash cow,” said board member Travis Bounds. “We will spend student money wisely. We’re just not going to dole it out because they ask for it.”
Patterson will be bringing more information to the board that will possibly include the names of speakers that students would like to see.
“I will definitely be working my hardest to get more student feedback and more solid names with actual people that students want to bring,” she said. “You can’t just ask someone, ‘Oh, you want to come to our school?’ You have to have a set number of money that you can spend.”
Until UB knows the amount of they will be able to spend, speakers cannot be set in stone, she said.
