Council seconds smoke-free campus resolution

The Council for University Planning and Budget voted to endorse the Faculty Senate’s resolution for a smoke-free campus and to amend the University Mission Statement and its constitution.

Council Chair Pat Fewell said although the council doesn’t make policy it does second the motion that Eastern’s campus be smoke-free by 2008. The council was divided as the votes numbered 15-12.

The council stated as far as planning and budgeting is concerned, a smoke-free campus would ultimately save thousands of dollars in campus maintenance and create a healthier environment.

“I’m not suggesting we impose extreme punishment, but this is obviously the trend,” said council member Linda Coffey.

The council voted unanimously in revising the University Mission Statement. The revisions were made and are to be presented to Eastern President Hencken for approval.

To create a smaller, well functioning committee the council voted 27-0 to changing its constitution. The changes wouldn’t take place until the next Faculty Senate election, but would result in shrinking the council to form a simpler structure.

Council member Assege HallieMarian said the issue of the groups size has been around for years.

The Parking Committee’s report, presented by Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs, outlined general concerns with campus parking. The committee questioned whether or not there is adequate parking and is researching lot expansion. A final report will be given at the semester’s end.

Construction updates noted the Lantz addition is on schedule and will reopen in time for spring semester classes.
