Presenting ‘smoke free campus’ report

Members of the Tobacco Task Force and Research and Creative Activity Focus Group will speak at today’s Faculty Senate meeting.

Eric Davidson, director of the Health Education Resource Center; Bryan Miller, associate professor of biology; and Graduate Assistant Chris Stanfield will present their “smoke-free campus” report.

The report was completed as part of their work on the Tobacco Task Force, said John Stimac, geology/geography professor and senate recorder.

The goal of the group is to look at Eastern’s tobacco policies and suggest ways to modify them in order to create a healthier environment, said Gary Bulla, associate professor of biology.

After a student survey that took place last year, the TTS will suggest a new tobacco policy to the senate, Bulla said.

Bob Chesnut, director of research and sponsored programs, along with senate member Lynn Curry will present a report about Eastern’s research and creative activities.

The group started informally, but one of the recommendations has been to make a permanent group on campus, Chesnut said.

The group researches ways in which professors of different departments use creative and research activities.

For example, the group studies the ways in which an art professor would paint for a class or how professors in the science department use research activities to gather information, Chesnut said.

“Two outcomes from their focus group was that Eastern could distinguish itself from other programs by emphasizing the integration we do between research/creative activities and education and our collaboration between faculty and student,” Stimac said.

The senate meets today at 2 p.m. in the Booth Library Conference Room 4440.
