EWP up for review

The Electronic Writing Portfolio has been used at Eastern to report the progress of students in certain subject areas to see what teachers need to improve on.

Karla Sanders, the director of the center for support and achievment, and Rebecca Throneburg, chair of the committee for assessment of student learning, will present what changes will be made to the EWP at Tuesday’s Faculty Senate meeting.

CASA has been invited to speak at senate meetings for the past two years, said John Stimac, geology/geography professor and faculty senate recorder.

In the past, students and teachers have had concerns with how effective EWP is for teachers, said Assege HaileMariam, chair of faculty senate.

Sanders is expected to inform the senate on how EWP is being used as an assessment tool, Stimac said.

Stimac would like to see the EWP require a course from a student’s major since most students use papers from courses that don’t involve their majors.

“Students would take it (EWP) more seriously,” Stimac said.

The purpose of EWP is to let teachers know what level a student is writing at and how well they know the subject matter, Stimac said.

This also lets teachers know what changes they need to make in the classroom, he said.

The senate will also discuss how to make EWP more user friendly and what steps CASA is taking to correct some of its’ shortcomings, HaileMariam said.

Tuesday’s meeting will take place at 2 p.m. in the Booth Library Conference Room 4440.
