Senate tables financial allocations
There was little discussion at the Wednesday Student Senate meeting as three proposals were tabled until next week’s meeting when they will be voted on.
Senate member Shawn Ready said he was not pleased with the amount of discussion that was given to the three bills.
“I think it’s stupid that we are not discussing it (proposals),” Ready said. “We (Student Senate) vote on it next week, and last year we talked about legislation the week before, too.”
Two of the proposals were for an additional $10,100 for Homecoming. About half of that will reimburse the University Board lectures account for the appearance of “Saved by the Bell” star Dennis Haskins. The rest will go towards sumo wrestling suits, inflatable games for the picnic and other costs.
“I hope the senators will get their questions answered,” said Student Senate Speaker Kent Ohms.
The Student Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing President Lou Hencken for his years of service at Eastern. The resolution highlighted Hencken’s leadership in the development of the Doudna Fine Arts Center, his support for the academic departments, and the renovations of Blair Hall after a 2003 fire.
Student Body President Sean Anderson addressed the Student Senate on the appointing of himself to the Presidential Search Committee, during his executive report. He argued that he was dependable and did not have a political agenda.
“I ran for Student Body President, because I had a vision for this university,” Anderson said.
Anderson said that EIU Safety Week is a huge success.
He said that many more students than expected have been showing up and that a lot of good feedback has been received so far.
“Every student is saying more patrolling police officers,” Anderson said. “In Greek Court they would really like to see at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 more patrolling just to feel safer.”
Another proposal to transfer money from a University Board account to another account to pay for student bands that don’t attend Eastern was also tabled.
The next Student Senate meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Arcola-Tuscola Room in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
