Sweet fun
Replace the gym floor or playground with tarps covered in oil.
Instead of foam or rubber balls, opt for chocolate-pudding-filled balloons.
Greek men and women will change the rules of dodge ball in an ooey-gooey attempt to raise money for a local charity.
Lambda Alpha Delta is sponsoring “Dirty Dodge Ball” today at 4 p.m.
LAD is an honorary fraternity, sometimes called Junior Greek Council, for future leaders of Greek Life.
The game is part of LAD’s philanthropy. The money raised from the event will be donated to Casa, a local child advocate agency.
Casa helps kids in foster care, and is the “voice in court” for abused and neglected children.
The choice to help a local group was easy for Ingrid McCallister, LAD president and junior elementary education major.
McCallister has lived in Charleston since she was 5.
For college, she received a full-ride scholarship to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. But after visiting the campus, she knew.
“This isn’t the place for me,” she said of SIUC.
She’s been involved with Greek Life and now has brought some of her work back home.
To join LAD, each fraternity and sorority selects two members from their chapter at the beginning of the year. LAD will be at a leadership camp in Indiana this Saturday and Sunday.
People who show leadership qualities and potential are usually selected to go, said Bob Dudolski, director of Greek Life. Members of LAD usually go on to become executive members of Panhellenic or Interfraternity Council.
For the competition, each team pays a $50 entry fee. Each additional team from a fraternity and sorority must pay $25.
Twelve-to-15 teams are expected to play, McCallister said.
This is the first year for Dirty Dodge ball, so McCallister said the plan was to keep it simple and small.
But LAD hopes to branch out next year and include more groups on campus, she said. The event begins at 4 p.m. in Greek Court.
