Anderson tries to nominate self to committee
Final changes made on the Sept. 20 Student Senate agenda prevented Student Body President Sean Anderson from being appointed to the Presidential Search Committee.
The Committee of Legislative Leadership submitted a letter to Anderson expressing its disappointment in Anderson for nominating himself for the committee at the Student Senate meeting on Sept. 13.
“The position should be open to all students,” said committee member Mark Bates. “We (the committee) felt that he all of a sudden announced that.”
One main concern of the committee was that the appointment be open to all students.
There are only two student positions on the Presidential Search Committee, and Executive Vice President Amanda Raz already filled one.
The letter to Anderson cites the Student Body Constitution and Internal Governing Policy 81.
The constitution states, “The Senate shall approve all student appointments, including appointments to student/faculty boards, committees, councils.all by two-thirds majority vote of the membership of the Senate.
“The Student Body President, after consultation with the executive branch of student government, shall appoint student members and chairs to the various Boards, subject to approval by Student Senate” is one of the points of Policy 81.
“We are just looking for some kind of oversight,” Bates said.
Bates said that he would not be opposed to Anderson serving on the committee, but he wants there to be an appointment process.
Student Senate Speaker Kent Ohms is currently working on resolving the issue.
“I am looking into the procedures on that right now and how the process is supposed to work,” Ohms said. “Hopefully we can arrive at a conclusion.”
Anderson would not comment on the situation at Wednesday night’s meeting.
According to the Student Senate Bylaws, the Committee on Legislative Leadership is comprised of the speaker and the committee chairpersons. It meets each week before the regular meeting and recommends the passage or rejection of each piece of legislation.
