Undefeated no longer
There is no longer an undefeated team in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Southeast Missouri, led by new head coach Tony Samuels, was the final OVC team to fall Saturday as the Redhawks (2-1, 0-1) lost at Jacksonville State 38-7.
With two weeks to prepare for Samuels retooled offensive scheme, Jacksonville State (1-1, 1-0) held the Redhawks scoreless for the first three quarters to win its home and conference opener.
Gamecocks’ senior tailback Clay Green rushed for 120 yards on 17 carries and a career-high three touchdowns
“I am really happy for Clay. One of these days, we are going to get Clay 25 carries, but I thought he ran with a purpose today,” Jacksonville State head coach Jack Crowe said, according to JSU’s athletic Web site.
A stingy Gamecock defense that held SEMO to 163 yards, which was the fewest yards gained by a JSU opponent since Alabama A&M picked up 143 yards in 2002.
“I thought we had a good defensive effort,” Crowe said. “Maybe an outstanding defensive effort. Anytime you hold a team under 200 yards, you are doing a lot of things right, defensively.
SEMO’s rushing attack came into the game averaging more than 240 yards but was held to 98 on the ground against Jacksonville State.
The Gamecocks are now 31-5 under Crowe when leading at the half.
Western Carolina 20, No.19 Eastern Kentucky 17
After rolling up 315 yards of total offense and holding Western Carolina without a first down in the first half, Eastern Kentucky fell victim to the upset bug.
The Colonels are now 0-9 in road non-conference games under head coach Danny Hope. Western Carolina scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to defeat EKU.
However, Western jumped out in front, 7-0, thanks to a blocked punt returned for a touchdown following Eastern Kentucky’s opening possession of the contest.
After a halftime crawling back from a 17-7 halftime deficit, EKU’s quarterback Josh Greco’s second interception of the evening set up the tying score for WCU.
Western Carolina needed just three plays to find the end zone as Bennett Swygert threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Jefferson with 6:35 left in the third quarter to even the score at 17.
With a 20-17 lead, Colonels kicker Taylor Long missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide right allowing WCU to run out the clock.
Tennessee State 31, Jackson State 30 OT
For the second consecutive year, Tennessee State (2-1) needed overtime to win the Southern Heritage Classic.
In front of 53,441 at the Liberty Bowl, Brandon Williams took a shovel pass from senior quarterback Richard Hartman, after a muffed snap on the final extra-point attempt, and forced his way into the end zone for a two-point conversion.
Sophomore quarterback Antonio Heffner completed 10 of 17 passes for 158 yards and was selected as the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Murray State 59, Indiana State 40
Murray State gave Matt Griffin his first win with the Racers program and the Sycamores losing streak increased to 20.
“We got this one, but we have to go right back to work and get ready for Illinois State,” Griffin said in the post game press conference.
The Racers (1-2) surpassed their total offense numbers put up in the first two games of the season in the first half against Indiana State.
Murray State finished with 514 yards of offense, which surpassed the combined total of 458, MSU accumulated in the first two games combined. The 59 points scored against the Sycamores is the most by a Murray State team since the Racers beat Tennessee State 62-40 on Nov. 11, 2000.
Racers tailback Chad Cook ended the game with 223 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns and moved into fourth in school history with 24 career scores. Indiana State quarterback Reilly Murphy threw for 306 yards and a pair of touchdowns along with two interceptions in losing effort.
Tennessee-Martin 35, Gardner-Webb 9
The Skyhawks rushed for nearly 300 yards and held a high-powered Gardner Webb offense in check to earn its second consecutive home win.
Gardner-Webb entered the game averaging 39.5 points and 482.5 yards of offense per game, but the Skyhawk defense made its stand early, holding Gardner-Webb to two first downs and 25 yards of offense in the first half.
The Skyhawks (2-1) were without its top two tailbacks as Donald Chapman was unavailable due to an ankle injury and Josh Chapman was suspended.
Newcomer Marcus Dawson picked up the slack rushing for 150 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.
UTM senior kicker Taylor Brown also set a new school record for most points scored in a game with 15.
