Golf team comes up short

The men’s golf team traveled to the Comfort Inn Belmont Intercollegiate at the Legends of Tennessee in Nashville, April 3-4 and the women’s team competed at the Payne Stewart Memorial in Springfield, Mo., April 2-4.

Head coach Mike Moncel traveled with the men’s team.

The men’s team took 10th out of the 11 teams. Among the top finishers were Belmont, EKU, Tennessee Tech and Cleveland State.

Senior Dustin Sloat highlighted the weekend with Eastern’s top finish.

He tied for ninth, shooting a 74-71-70 for the 54 holes for an overall score of 215 (+2). He finished nine strokes behind the winner Scott Stalling of Tennessee Tech.

The women’s team did not do well, said junior Jackie Bodis.

Bodis forgot to sign her scorecard after the first day of competition and was disqualified from her first round.

“We just overall played bad,” she said.

The team finished 13th out of 15 teams with a team score of 1042. Amy Simons was the top Panther and tied for 39th place. The top finishers of the meet were Arkansas-Little Rock (924), Illinois State (961), Bradley University (964), and Oral Roberts University (966).

The women will go to Urbana for the Illini Spring Classic at Stone Creek Golf Course April 13-15.

The men will continue their season in Dayton, Ohio, in the Wright State meet at the Gateway National Golf Course April 8-10.
