Panthers search for first OVC win

Eastern travels to Kentucky this weekend, with both the men (6-6, 0-2 OVC) and women (3-9, 0-2) looking for their first Ohio Valley Conference victories.

“I think for the guys, especially, all the matches we’ve been pretty even,” said head coach John Blackburn. “The women played a good game Tuesday. I hope we can carry that over (to Saturday’s match).”

After today’s match at Morehead State, both teams travel to Richmond, Ky., to take on Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

Morehead (5-10, 0-3) has struggled this year, since OVC Player of the Year Greg Johnstone graduated last spring.

The Eagle women (2-12, 0-2) come into today’s match losing three straight.

The tennis team will have good weather, with highs in the upper 60s with a mix of sun and clouds. The team will play indoors in the case of rain, Blackburn said.

The weekend trip to Kentucky is the first road matches in conference play for Eastern, but Blackburn isn’t worried about the travel.

“I think that we’ll be ready for it,” he said. “We’ve played a lot of road games already.”

The Panthers have had only two home matches this year, both last weekend against Tennessee-Martin and Tennessee Tech.

The EKU men (7-10, 1-2) are heading into today’s match with a three-match winning streak.

The Colonel women (8-5, 1-1) are also heading into Saturday’s match with three straight wins.

With the Panther women’s victory against Western Illinois this week, the team snapped a 6-match losing streak.
