A chance to bounce back
The Payne Stewart/Missouri State Memorial and Hickory Hills Golf Course will give the women’s golf team a chance to bounce back from a poor tournament this past weekend.
But the weather conditions have kept them from practicing, and that has affected their performance.
Thus far, the team has been inconsistent. They have shot scores well into the 80s. That led them to an 11th place showing at the Saluki Invitational out of 13 teams.
“We weren’t prepared for this one,” said head coach Mike Moncel.
He also added that the weather had a lot to do with the team not shooting well.
“They didn’t handle the weather well,” Moncel said.
Freshman Carrie Riordan had the highest individual placing for the Panthers last weekend. She shot an 82 and an 86, which was good enough for 39th place. She is currently averaging in the high 70s.
“I cannot let bad shots ruin the day,” she said.
Another freshman on the team, Michelle Anderson, shot scores of 93 and 87 last weekend.
The team has a potential to win, but there are a lot of good teams in the conference, she said.
Although the Panthers struggled last weekend, junior Jacky Bodis is confident the team will fair better in the next tournament.
“If you have a consistent swing, it’s the mental game that will help you or hurt you,” Bodis said. The team is very young and is hurting in experience she said.
The team will participate today in a qualifying match that will determine which golfers will get to play in the next tournament. The team has just been starting to practice more this week and is happy to be back out golfing.
“Qualifying for the conference tournament depends on how much they want it,” Moncel said.
The next tournament should provide some indication if they have a chance to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
