External relations to look at Fourth Street lights, Unified Development Code
An update on the Unified Development Code and discussion of operation times for the pedestrian light on Fourth Street are two topics up for discussion at the first External Relations Committee meeting of the semester, which is set to take place Tuesday.
Marty Ruhaak, committee chair, said in addition, committee members will discuss the informal subcommittee of external relations that has been created to deal with noisy house parties, and members will also hear an update on Charleston’s city manager search.
The External Relations Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1895 Room of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union.
The Unified Development Code has been undergoing revision for the past year and a half to redefine residential zones, relax R2 zoning and determine a university influence area, Ruhaak said. Tuesday’s meeting will have an update on the project, which is slated to be voted on by the Charleston City Council at the end of February or the beginning of March.
Discussion took place toward the end of last semester on operation times for the pedestrian light on Fourth Street near Stevenson Hall and the Triad, Ruhaak said. The light was installed last spring in an effort to slow traffic where a lot of students cross the road.
Currently the light flashes 24 hours a day, but it will soon be changed to turn on around 6 or 7 a.m. and turn off by 7 p.m., Ruhaak said. This will be done by an automatic timer.
The first meeting of the subcommittee created to deal with noise levels is taking place Feb. 28, Ruhaak said. At that meeting, a name for the subcommittee will be chosen and their objectives defined, Ruhaak said. The group hopes to come up with a way to deal with house party noise in a fair and uniform manner.
The committee will also receive an update on Charleston’s city manager search, Ruhaak said. The candidate pool has been narrowed down to four with the new city manager set to be chosen in next month or so.
