Shuttle bus beseiged by vandalism
Continuing instances of vandalism on the late night bar route of the Panther Express have prompted the Shuttle Bus Committee to begin looking into ways to curb vandalism and violence.
Recent acts of vandalism include broken windows and cigarette burns, Scott Harrison, owner of H&H Transportation, which runs the Panther Express system, said Thursday.
In addition, one time an individual climbed through the emergency hatch and sat on top of the bus, Ronnie Deedrick, chair of the bus committee, said Thursday.
He said the most severe incident happened last spring when a driver on the route was physically assaulted.
Harrison said the incidents occur regularly on the late night bar route, especially during events like Homecoming and “full moons.”
“There’s no way to stop it,” he said.
Since the shuttle bus began operation at least seven windows have been broken out. Four of five of those windows were broken out on one bus on a late night route recently.
Dean Johns, a representative for H & H Transportation, which runs the Panther Express system, told the committee Wednesday that the vandals “just take their fists and bust out the windows.”
And about four weeks ago the bus on the late night route was overloaded, causing damage to the air ride system, Harrison said. The damage cost $6,000.
Ronnie Deedrick, chair of the Shuttle Bus Committee, said Thursday he will try to have a meeting with acting Police Chief Adam Due and Shirley Stewart, interim vice president for student affairs, to discuss possible ways to curb these situations.
Possible actions include installing a camera or getting some kind of supervisor to monitor behavior, Deedrick said.
Currently, the only thing that can be done when an incident takes place is for the driver to get the person’s name and ask the individual to get off the bus, Deedrick said. That may be all that can be done for now, he said.
