Greek Block Party Sunday

It’s time once again for fall recruitment on Eastern’s campus, and members of fraternities and sororities are gearing up for this year’s Greek Block Party.

The event, open to anyone interested in joining a fraternity or sorority, will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday between Greek Court and Carman Hall.

The main attractions at the event are free food, a live DJ and information booths on all 26 of Eastern’s fraternities and sororities, said Bob Dudolski, director of Greek life.

Hot dogs, hamburgers, soda and chips will be provided, and each booth will have information available on the fraternities and sororities under Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council and National Panhellenic Council, he said.

Five or six representatives will be at each booth with information on who the various fraternities and sororities are and what they do, he said.

“The purpose of the event is for people who are interested in recruitment to get to know the students involved,” Dudolski said. “There’s no formality.”

Last year was the first year the block party was held. Previously, a dance was held, but students were more interested in free food, and the University Board already had an opening dance, Dudolski said.

He said he believes students should consider joining a fraternity or sorority because of the numerous opportunities it provides.

“They can gain leadership skills, have opportunities in scholarship and academic support, make friendships that last a lifetime and have a good sense of belonging,” he said.

“Students involved in any organization on campus have a stronger tie with the university,” Dudolski said. “They’re more likely to stay in touch with the university after they’ve left.”
