Spring break games to begin in South Quad today
Most students are rounding schoolwork up this week, getting ready for their big departure for spring break. However, there are a few things that students should take into consideration before they hop in the car or on the plane.
The University Police Department and BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students), a peer education group, are teaming up this afternoon to give students some safety tips for spring break.
From 2 to 5 p.m. in the South Quad there will be a
variety of events to promote safety and health during spring break, said Jessica Galloway, president of BACCHUS. One such event is seat belt relays which consist of four-person teams.
“It’s a lot like a Chinese fire drill except you have to buckle in each time,” Galloway said. “(The seatbelt relays) are to promote traffic safety if you’re going anywhere for spring break. It’s a reminder to buckle up for those who are going long distances.”
Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
The University Police Department also plans to hold a drunken driver’s course. Students who want to try to complete the course must wear fatal vision goggles that impair vision to compare with vision that results while under the influence of alcohol, Galloway said. While wearing the goggles, the students will then drive a golf cart and try to complete a course set up by the UPD, she said.
Many of the campus’s RSOs also will have booths set up giving students information on safety and health issues relating to spring break. Students also will have a chance to play Condom Bingo, Galloway said.
“It’s just like playing `bingo’ except you spell the word condom,” she said.
The object of condom bingo is to try and promote sexual awareness to those vacationing for spring break, she said.
Papa Johns will serve free pizza to those who come and check out the festivities, Galloway said.
“There’s lots of great prizes we’ll be giving away,” she said.
