Internet workshop offered
Late nights of slamming heads against computers because the information needed for that paper can’t be found on the Internet may be over – as soon as tonight.
Mark May, assistant director for academic assistance and learning assistance, plans to help students figure out how to use the right search engines on the Internet to find what they’re searching. The workshop, “Finding Information on the Internet,” starts at 5:30 p.m. in Ninth Street Hall, Learning Assistance Center, and is part four of the Surthriver Series.
The Surthriver Series is modeled after the new television show, Survivor, and features much of the same kind of challenges seen on T.V., May said. Raffle tickets are rewarded for completing specific challenges and attendance to the workshops. Raffle ticket prizes including free food, movie passes, games of bowling and an Alpha Treatment at The Razorz Edge, will be raffled off after the workshop tonight.
“Finding Information on the Internet,” is the last workshop in the series and focuses on trying to narrow down the hundreds of search engines out there to approximately five search engines that are beneficial for academic use, May said.
“There are dozens of good (search engines) out there,” May said. “Most people only know about one or two.”
May said he will try to focus in on tricks that can be used to limit and narrow a search so students can find what they’re looking for more rapidly. “Then we’ll actually get on the Internet and try it out,” May said. This is where the challenges come in that are similar to those on Survivor. “We’ll see who can get the answers to the questions the fastest,” he said.
